What am I getting at? An example of metrasexuality is a woman who enjoys following sport, dreams for a suped-up sports car, and wants to go camping or fishing on her weekend. Thing is, this woman is not a lesbian, and is not “trying to be a man”. Usually, met-sexuals can also carry ou, and to some extent, enjoy playing traditional roles of their sex, however, Mets usually find that keeping within these boundaries to be boring or un-challenging.

The same goes for men, and this is where the term Metrosexual gets used the most. Usually accused of being “gay”, Metrosexual men are “in touch with their feminine side”, and are confident about wearing a pink shirt and doing their hair.

Well peoples, its that time of year again… New Years Eve. Whilst I usually love celebrations fireworks, I always seem to find myself at lame locations, or hanging out with people that I don’t want to hang out with. Reviewing my last few NYE’s, at the beginning of… I was:

2006: Walking around Southbank, Brisbane, calling up whoever would pick up on my phone to talk to, in order to get away from my family, but more importantly the people that were hanging out with our family. The infamous family friends.

2005: This was actually an alright one, I was at a girlfriend’s house, just chilling with friends from cadets and school. We ended the night by playing Manopoly on her gamecube

2004: I think that I was at an Aunties house, and was bored out of my brains, so I went to bed at around 10 pm, cos I wasn’t going to bore myself silly waiting to see fireworks on tv. The people running up and down the street at midnight really made me cheerful as they yelled out to all and sundry how happy their new years was. *grumble*

And thats about as much as I can remember at the moment, but NYE can be such a cool event, but it can also be the suckiest one around. Brisbanites have about 6hrs left of 2006 at the moment, and I’m wondering how my NYE is going to be. I’m driving a friend’s car at the moment, cos mine is at her place while I play chauffer for her this weekend. This is fine with me, but it also narrows down what I can do this weekend.

So I suppose there will be a follow up blog on how my night went… but I’m not holdingm y breath in anticipation, cos i think its going to turn out pretty shite…

However that does not mean to say that I don’t with all and sundry a Happy New Year!!!

Recently as my sister’s fancy dress semi-formal, I was delighted to see some blasts from the past making their appearance on the catwalk at the fashion show that the students had before going off to the main event, to show their costumes off. Out of the many and various costumes that the kids had com eup with, I was delighted to see some classic culture making itself known. Among these included:

3 Ghostbusters

Mr Bean

The Lumberjack from Monty Python’s Flying Circus

and A Gumby from MPFC

There were heaps of other really great costumes, but these really caught my attention. The fact that these kids, born in and around 1990, actually know about Ghostbusters and MPFC is… well surprising to say the least. Well done to them for going through their parent’s stuff, and really getting educated.

As the fashion officionado that I am, I absolutely must protest the return of balloon skirts, spotty fabric, pastel/plastic jewellery and big glasses. Ok, so dressing up like you never left the 80′s might seem cool to people right now, but give it about 10 years, and the young women out there who are rushing into their closest Valleygirl, Dotti or Supre to buy plastic bangles, tights (to wear under their skirts, of course) and ballet slippers to go with it all, are seriously going to regret the purchase… Fr most, it’ll come back to haunt them when they turn 21, for the rest…. well, you should know better.

I suppose the reason why this fashion phase is getting to me is because, whilst I was born in the 80′s, I wasn’t really subjected to its atrocious fashion sense until the 90′s… when my cousins decided that they wanted to move on, and handed down any clthing they deemed ‘uncool’. So I was subjected to flouro coloured shorts and T’s, shoulder pads, big bows on my clothes and scrunchies, when everyone else was moving on to baggy jeans with big belts, purse backpacks, overalls, ‘bum-bags’ (you know, the bags that you clipped around your waist) and layered haircuts a-la Rachael-from-the-TV-show-’Friends’ (for those still out of the loop, Jennifer Aniston’s character?)

I dunno, call me gloomy, but I seriously think that, while returning to 70′s fashion, or as early as the 1920′s, even bringing back camofluage pants every so often, is a mad thing to do (especially the camo pants, in my case! ), the 80′s sense of style should remain just there… in the 80′s.

Power dressing is NO LONGER NECESSARY. Feminism has done its job. Lets leave the shoulder pads in the past, shall we?

For those of you who don’t know what ‘tweenies’ are, you probably haven’t realised that they’re taking over our TV’s, the vanity mirror in the bathroom, and our washing loads. Still haven’t cottoned on yet? Ok, maybe you might have seen a mini-Britney Spears, or Christina Aguilera walking about the shopping centres with her other little mini-Spears girlfriends. Better yet, you may have seen her in the lingerie-section-for-kiddies (yep, they have them!) or the make up section, with her own special brand of cosmetics for kids.

Tweenies are those kids, usually little girls, aged from about 5 to 12 who dress up, act, and buy the accessories similar to that of teenagers and young adults. Midrif tops, hipster pants, high-heels, lipstick, nailpolish and flashy handbag with matching purse. In other words, another slurry-Mc-Flurry in the making.

Whatever happened to kids being kids, wearing kids clothing, and doing kiddy things?? I’ve spoken about this with friends form school, and they can’t seem to understand it either. What makes it worse is the fact that companies have realised the trend, and have started to capitalise upon it! more so than originally!

What I’m talking about here is the Bratz dolls that you can get (not to mention the accompanying merchandise including pencil cases, clothing, books, bags, colour pencils etc). Now, I get that Barbie was around for WAY longer than Bratz dolls, but at least she was something to aspire to when you grew up. Bratz, on the other hand, show female figurines of an indeterminate age, that could range frome 10 to 20 years of age. Now this wouldn’t be so bad, but the fact that all they talk about is fashion, beauty and boys, i.e. the more superficial things in life; and are AIMED at kids in primary school just scares me. I picked up a colouring in book, thinking to buy it for a little girl that I know, who is in grade 1, flipped through it, and all I could see was “Meet Cameron! We call him ‘the Blaze’ cos he’s hot!” and on their website, they have horoscopes that say stuff like “Game over? Your crush is playing games with you and your sooooooooooooo over the drama! So if he doesn’t give you the attention you deserve, then he’s not crush material, period!” Ok advice for an atleast 13-something, but not what I would even consider talking about with a 5 year old!

Maybe I’m just too Old School, but kids are kids, and I think that we rob them of something when we dress them up to be mini-adults. They’ll have all those worries to contend with soon enough, shouldn’t they just enjoy their childhood without worry about breaking a nail? Sorry if you find dressing little kids up like this cute and amusing, but this little lady is not impressed.

Well, at the age of 22, with 12 years of schooling and two degrees under my belt, I’ve found that life is completely different to how I had imagined it, say, 10 years ago. Even 5 years ago, I don’t think that I had any idea, whatsoever, how the world would be once school had finished.

Even now, I find that I’m still experiencing new things (both good and bad) that sometmes make me stop and go “right. That was different”. With the ‘good things’ you accept, and move on in life. However, with some of the bad things… Well, lets just say that they keep cropping up. How weird is that? An example: Tweenies. But I wont be going into that kettle of fish right about now. I’ll leave that for another blog.

As a teacher in a secondary school, I find that I constantly come across reminders of my age. Either its “you’re Old School Miss!” from the kiddies, or “Oh to be so young again!” from my colleagues. Being the baby of the teaching staff, I suppose, doesn’t help either. But I’ve learnt to live with that.

I hope that this blog spot can be a place for people to have a chance to either dump emotionally, or just to poke fun at those who do.

Ok, thats it for now, from this proud Generation Y-er!

In the words of Bobby McFerrin:

cos when you worry, your face will frown,
and that will bring everybody down,
so don’t worry, be happy

Peace, out!
